inappropriate quote of the day

My principal said this to me today, "Don't ever get pregnant, because after the baby, you have to deal with the kid." Thanks for that piece of assvice.  Why did you go into education? They were talking about problems that come up when pregnant, because I teacher I work with had a pretty bad complication (though she and baby are fine now).  Still, not appropriate.

boys

Boys and their bon.ers! I can't believe it! This 12 year old who I am tutoring is getting a bon.er while we are working! He wears the tight skinny jeans, and the last two times he has unbuttoned the jeans, because I think they get uncomfortable. I'm uncomfortable! His mom is a friend/coworker. I don't know how to address this! Maybe I'll write some word problems for next time about mom buying bras, or tampons, or grandma getting underwear, or something equally turnoff-ish. Any ideas? What really turns off men(boys)?

Halloween '09

Image
At school (work) the kids can dress up for Halloween, as long as they dress as a character from a book or as someone in a helping profession. I followed suit, and dressed as the character from one of my favorite picture books, The Princess Knight . It was a very last minute costume, but it seemed to work fine! Go head over to Mel's and see what the rest of the class is sharing!

wee wee-wee

One of the 'best' parts of working with wee little kids, is seeing who my maste.rbaters are going be each year. Over the years, most of them have been pretty subtle-- a hand in a pocket, a light rocking on the chair. Of course, there have also been the less shameful ones-- getting out of a chair to bend over the front corner or it, hands vigorously moving inside the pants, etc. Well, this year, I got to see the wee boner. He stuck his hands down his shorts while they were all sitting on the carpet, pulled the elastic way out, and let it hang out there at attention. 7 years old. I, of course, jump right on the "let's all make sure we're sitting criss-cross with our hands in our laps! (outside our pants)" I'm just glad none of the other students saw and said something. I could just hear one of them scream out, "OMG, Mrs. M, I see his pee-pee!" And, everyone would look. And, my work email inbox would be flooded with parent concerns.... agai...

at least they make me laugh

Today, I was teaching short i and the 'it' family words (fit, knit, hit, bit..).  I'm hoping not to hear sh -it or t -it.  I was expecting a giggle if someone said sp-it.  As I'm writing the words on the board, I decide to call on one last student.  I get, cl -it.  Normally when a kid makes up a word, pretending it's a real word, I ask if they know what it means or can use it in a sentence.  In this case, I didn't want to ask.  I decided to move on, while laughing inside.

Why I love my job

Me:  What are some adjectives that describe Grandfather in this story? 3rd grader 1: sad 3rd grader 2: depressed 3rd grader 3: He should take cymbalta.  It helps the people in those commercials!  Me (losing composure to laughter):  Unfortunately, at this time there was no cymbalta yet. These kids make me laugh everyday.  There is always something new.
